A lot of smokers light up a cigarette because they are feeling stressed. They say that the act of taking in all those chemicals has an effect on the body and relieves the stress. This is a form of self-medication. Many people who have given up smoking say the main reason for their relapse is stress. But the fact is taking in nicotine causes stress.
We all know that stress in unavoidable in life. There’s no way to avoid it completely and in fact we wouldn’t want to as there is such a thing as positive stress. We should also recognize that stress comes in many different forms at many different times and that what is stressful for one person isn’t stressful for another.
There is no ‘one size fits all’ way of dealing with stress but one thing is for sure and that is that smoking is not a good way of dealing with it.
So what happens when we are stressed and we smoke a cigarette? The nicotine gets to the brain in eight seconds and causes the release of a chemical called Dopamine. This is because nicotine is a mood altering substance. Dopamine causes feelings that the bodies craves over and over, relaxation and pleasure. This feeling of relief from stress is really just the relief from nicotine withdrawal.
But what is actually happening physically is that there more stress. There is less oxygen for the body, the heart rate has increased, blood pressure has gone up and the muscles have become tense.
So what we find is that smoking is the actual cause of stress. Nicotine day after day causes stress as its dependence rises and falls with each cigarette. Stopping smoking will halt the craving for nicotine and therefore the everyday stress level will decrease.
With hypnotherapy the subconscious is shown that nicotine is not essential and that it is in fact a negative. Contact me to see how we can work together to stop smoking.
